Above "F.H.S.O.", written by Trimen in the first line of the letter, noted in pencil is: "[Francis Henry Samuel Orpen] 1824-93". Francis Orpen was brother to Charles S Orpen and Joseph M Orpen. A former surveyor, at the time of this letter the retired Orpen was member of the Cape House of Assembly for Barkley West and first president of the newly formed South African Institution of Engineers, Architects and Surveyors. He was also a "friend of science", especially astronomy and geology in South Africa. 3. George Stow's book, published only in 1905, was titled "The Native Races of South Africa. A History of the Intrusion of the Hottentots and Bantu into the Hunting Grounds of the Bushmen, the Aborigines of the Country."
