Notes

1. Hermann Bleek, Wilhelm Bleek's brother, was also a resident of Leones, at least in 1878 and again in 1883 (judging by his children's place of birth per the family "E - Sethe" geneaology [B8.47, p.11].) 2. At the time of this letter the Premier was John Gordon Sprigg. 3. Mr Maskew was the Chief Librarian of the SA Public Library at the time of Wilhelm Bleek's death and Dr Dale was Chairman of the SAPL Committee. See Jemima Bleek's letter to Sir George Grey dated 8 September 1875, in which she describes Wilhelm's struggles with the Committee, the situation at the Grey Library shortly after Wilhelm's death in 1875 and how Lucy's appointment came about. [See JB to Sir GG C10.17] 4. "H.E." refers to Cape Governor (until September 1880) His Excellency Sir Henry Bartle Frere. Mr WF Littleton was his private secretary. 5. Lucy means ǀuma and Da, who joined the two older ǃkun boys ǃnanni and Tamme at Mowbray on 25 March 1880 (says 24 March in letter).
