1. Miss Frere, friend to Lucy and Jemima, was one of Sir Bartle Frere's daughters. Because Lucy addresses her as "Miss Frere", it is likely that she is his eldest daughter, Mary Eliza Isabella Frere, given the convention of the day. Sir Bartle Frere was appointed Governor of the Cape and High Commissioner for Southern Africa in 1877, so at the time of this letter he and his family were relative newcomers to the Cape. 2. Joseph M Orpen, colonial administrator and amateur ethnographer.
