Notes

1. On the top left of the first page of the letter "Copy" has been written in ink in parentheses. 2. "re Stow drawings" has been noted in pencil on the top right of the first page of the letter. 3. Lucy adds in an asterixed note on 12 November that the postmaster in Mowbray assured them the parcel-weighing situation had been remedied. 4. Mr WF Littleton was private secretary to Sir Henry Bartle Frere while he was Governor. 5. Miss Frere, friend to Lucy Lloyd and Jemima Bleek, is one of Sir Bartle Frere's daughters. Because Lucy addresses her as "Miss Frere" it is likely that she is his eldest daughter, Mary Eliza Isabella Frere, given the convention of the day. 6. Henry Christy and Édouard Lartet, paleoanthropologists. 7. Lucy mentions that Lartet responded to their published appeal with a kind note. [See Lucy's September 1875 appeal to "friends of science" for assistance publishing and continuing Wilhelm Bleek's Bushman research. C15.5]
