A pair of semi-translucent, pale blue opaline glass vases applied with gold.

vases (chosen as a gift for Jemima and Wilhelm Bleek's wedding by the Sandersons), Anne Roos (the vases were last in her possession), Lucy Lloyd (carried the vases ashore after they surfaced from the water), Waldensian (the vases were temporarily lost after it shipwrecked near Struis Bay), shipwreck (of the Waldensian), Struis Bay (Lucy was shipwrecked near that location while en route to Cape Town)

With a narrow neck, pedestal base, and silhouette resembling a Greek vessel form from antiquity called lekythos, the pair was likely manufactured in Europe during the 19th century (before 1862). These blue, opaline glass vases were a wedding gift to Jemima Lloyd and Wilhelm Bleek from Lloyd's Natal friends, John and Marie Sanderson (https://digitalbleeklloyd.uct.ac.za/metadata/photographs/albums/natal-germany-landscape/48/index.html). They were sent with Lucy Lloyd on the Waldensian mailboat from Durban to Cape Town in October 1862. The ship did not, however, reach Cape Town but shipwrecked at Struis Bay on the 13th of October, 1862. The vases surfaced from the water in the aftermath of the Waldensian shipwreck and were carried ashore by Lucy Lloyd. In 2007, the vases were in the possession of Marjorie Scott's elder daughter, Anne Roos, residing in South Africa's Port Alfred.
