Notes

"Overland to Lobito Bay. The Venturesome Journey of Two Ladies. By M.A.P. In three articles , of which this is the second, there is described the venturesome journey of two ladies across Angola. The first article took the record of the tour to the Anglo-Portuguese border. II." The second part in a published account (in "Cape Times") of a trip to Angola undertaken by "two ladies" and their time spent with the Bushmen there. "M.A.P." is Mary Peacock, Dorothea Bleek's companion on her 1925 expedition to Angola. A section of this article is devoted to the Bushmen and headed: "A Month's Work Among the Bushmen." In it, an account is given of how the two women made camp near the river Kutsi and two Bushman families moved over, built huts, and gave interviews, in turns or all together, in the mornings and afternoons. These involved answering questions about the names of their relations, objects of daily life and surroundings, descriptions of their hunting and travels - and anything else they could be interested in talking about. These Bushmen were paid for their labours in a portion of meal and spoonfuls of salt. The article gives details about named individuals and the Bushmen in general. The Kutsi group are not the only Bushmen encountered and interviewed by Bleek and Peacock in this article. The newspaper page is numbered 23 in the top right corner.
