"The Bushmen. Language, Art and Folk Lore. Interesting Lecture." A "Cape Argus" report on Dorothea Bleek's lecture, "Bushmen, their language and art," delivered in Bloemfontein. Bleek describes her family's history with the Bushmen regularly forming a part their household. Bleek goes on to describe some characters and elements of Bushman mythology and folklore. She then discussed elements of their language (dialects, vocabulary and grammar as well as clicks). Next she discusses their racial characteristics in relation to other groups like the Bantu. Bleek states that the unchanged "stone age" life of the Bushman sheds light on that of prehistoric man. She then describes the carefree lifestyle and attitude of the Bushmen (with an illustrative quote from ||kabbo) as well as their artistry, evident all over the southern half of the continent in the form of paintings, chippings and implements. Bleek takes this opportunity to address questions of their origins and creation. She emphasises that "as to the paintings, there is no doubt" and some are clearly of "recent age" (judging from contemporary subject matter and the fact living Bushmen identified them as having been created by their own people). While chippings were no doubt far older and made by Bushman ancestors, old men knew people who had made them. Although there are multiple articles on this newsprint page it is clear that Bleek kept the page for article about her Bushman lecture. Right-hand side of newspaper page is torn/text missing.
