Correspondence
A letter from Lucy Lloyd dated 18 September 1875, sent with Wilhelm Bleek's Second Report Concerning Bushman Researches, appeals to "friends of science" for funds to print and continue his important Bushman language and folklore work. Written a month after Wilhelm's death, Lucy explains he had planned to send out the printed Second Report and appeal to supporters but died before doing so. As his appointed successor, she now appeals in his stead. She asks for a Committee to be formed to manage fundraising and execute Wilhelm's plans, urging immediate support to preserve Native Folklore "while this is still possible". The letter includes a passage from Wilhelm's appeal to the Colonial Government for additional funding, lists his former supporters and names potential Committee members in England, Germany and the Cape. Lucy concludes with an apology for any omissions, as the letter was written "in a time of heavy sorrow" and, in addition to details of Wilhelm's last days, includes a codicil from his will urging support for their joint work documenting a "dying out race".
