Correspondence
A note from Jemima Lloyd to Wilhelm Bleek written on 15 Nov 1862, a week before their wedding. Jemima writes that Loui should already be with him, carrying her "answer" - not in an envelope, but safe in Loui's hands, though she does not know its contents. Jemima asks Wilhelm to send Tom around 11, by which time she will have more written. She is feeling better, but Loui is tired and poorly; if he cannot persuade her to return "here" to write, he must at least make her some coffee. She signs off, "till 11".
answer, coffee, daily writing letters, employee, ill health, Jemima Lloyd, letter, Loui, Lucy Lloyd, meeting, messages, November 1862, poorly, safe hands, tired, Tom, unsafe messages, Wilhelm Bleek, writing letters
1. Judging by her and Wilhelm's notes, Jemima arrived in the Cape some time between 10 and 14 November. 2. The wedding was on 22 November 1862. 2. "15 Nov 62" has been added in pen on the top of the first page, presumably on a later occasion. The note is otherwise undated and, unlike the first two, has no time annotated (although it was written between the 2nd and 4th notes of 10am and 11am). 3. See Jemima's second, 10am, note containing her "answer" to something Wilhelm said to her. [C8.24] 4. Tom is the ""American Negro"" formerly first cook on the wrecked Waldensian and employed by Bleek for the New Street house. See Wilhelm Bleek's letter to Fanny Lloyd 30 October 1862 [C6.5]. 5. Jemima and Lucy are staying before the marriage at Mrs Roesch's boarding house. See WB to JL 9 November 1862 [C4.24].
