Correspondence
First in a series of notes from Jemima Lloyd to Wilhelm Bleek after arriving in Cape Town, written on 15 Nov 1862, a week before their wedding. On Saturday morning at 9am Jemima writes of her distress over Tom returning to Wilhelm without waiting for her answer. If Tom does not return soon she plans to send Wilhelm a message to ease their mutual anxieties. Loui is at breakfast. Jemima cannot address the "business part" [of Wilhelm's note] and feels "the other" matter is too sensitive to discuss in an unsafe message.

1. Judging by her and Wilhelm's notes, Jemima arrived in the Cape some time between 10 and 14 November 1862. The wedding was on 22 November 1862. 2. "15 Nov" has been added in pen on presumably a later occasion in front of "Sat'y morning 9 oclock". For Wilhelm Bleek's reply to one of Jemima's Saturday 15th notes, see WB to JL 16 November 1862 [C4.25]. 3. Tom is the "American Negro" former first cook on the wrecked Waldensian employed by Bleek for the New Street house. [See C6.5: Wilhelm Bleek's letter to Fanny Lloyd 30 October 1862] 4. Jemima and Lucy stayed before the marriage at Mrs Roesch's boarding house. [See WB to JL 9 November 1862, C4.24]. 5. Jemima is referring to the marriage settlement being drawn up before their marriage. [See WB to JL 16 November 1862, C4.25]
