Correspondence
A letter from Wilhelm Bleek to Jemima Lloyd sent from Cape Town and dated 20 October 1861. Wilhelm responds to Jemima's long, chatty letter and asks for more details about Lucy's relationship with George Woolley. There is much religious discussion and Wilhelm shares his plans for possible employment and travel, and tells Jemima news of his sisters. Anticipating his romantic declaration in his next letter, Wilhelm discusses the topic of long engagements; also the implications of his becoming a husband, especially the difficulties given his invalidism and unsettled future, and thus the sacrifices that would be demanded of his wife.

1. This letter is very difficult to read, as not all Wilhelm's writing is legible. 2. To be expected given their shared unorthodoxy and the professions of their fathers. 3. There are photographs of George and Mr Woolley. See Photographs and Portraits on this website.
