Summary

A letter in English from Wilhelm Bleek to Jemima Lloyd, sent in Cape Town and not dated but almost certainly the morning of Sunday 16 November 1862. It concerns the drawing up of the marriage settlement and/or antenuptial contract before their wedding. Wilhelm apologises for bringing Mr Fairbridge, solicitor, to Jemima but tells her she need not follow his advice. He has tried to visit the Reverend Glover to arrange the marriage service, mentions his employee Tom, asks after her and Lucy's health and refers to their meeting that day.

Notes

1. Judging by the dates of the other letters in the sequence, and the fact that Wilhelm's previous dated letter was written on Sunday 9 November, it is likely written on Sun. 16 November 1862. Jemima's first notes to Wilhelm after arriving in the Cape were written in the morning of Sat. 15 November 1862 [see C8.23 and C8.24]. 2. Jemima refers to the matter of the antenuptial contract and settlement as "business" in her 10am note of 15 Nov 1862 [see C8.24]. 3. Tom is the "American Negro", formerly first cook on the wrecked Waldensian and employed by Wilhelm for the New Street house [see C6.5: Bleek's letter to Fanny Lloyd, 30 October 1862]). He also delivers parcels, letters and messages for Wilhelm and Jemima.
