A letter from Lucy Lloyd to Ernst Haeckel sent from Cape Town on 24 July 1877. Lucy adds this short letter to Jemima's of the previous day, sending warm greetings to Haeckel and his family and thanking him for his sympathetic letter during their "hard struggles". She compliments the photographs of his children and joins Jemima in her sorrow over his family's loss. The main concern of her letter is expressing her sympathy having heard of the death of Haeckel's friend Professor Ranceri [?], who had shown her kindness. She recalls her attempt to collect a specimen of a luminous Cape insect for him but was prevented by the hardships of the time and later by poor health. Lucy reflects on the pain of losing such a "noble-hearted" man and muses on whether dying suddenly amid one's work can be called "a glorious death".
