Summary

A letter from Wilhelm Bleek to Sir George Grey, sent from Cape Town on 20 October 1863. Bleek sends a parcel to Canterbury with a Grey Library catalogue, a poem and a translated manuscript. He comments on the progress of enlightened religious views at the Cape, including Rev. Kotze's (of the Dutch Reformed Church) catechism case and the upcoming trial of the Bishop of Natal, for whom Bleek will act as representative and deliver his letter. He discusses the contents of the letter, involved parties and related controversies as well as the Bishop's publication and warm European reception. Library bookcases are being installed, and Bleek hopes to start a publication society in England to publish Grey's manuscripts. "Hottentot Fables" is delayed, as his publisher is unwell. Bleek is in good health, Jemima is improving and their daughter is well. He closes with sympathy for Grey's troubles in New Zealand.

Notes

1. Bleek is probably referring to Grey's role in the New Zealand colonial wars against the Māori. 2. For a short summary of this letter, see Dr OH Spohr's typewritten notes on Wilhelm Bleek's letters to Sir George Grey (C10.19.1-26).
