Correspondence
A letter from Bishop John Colenso to Wilhelm Bleek, sent from Bishopstowe, Natal, on 18 August 1871. Colenso reports he is sending a "castigating" review of Bishop Browne's "New Commentary" to England. He mentions hearing of Bleek's "labours with the Bushman language", expressing hope that his work might shift public opinion about the "despised race". As in his December letter, Colenso recounts his ongoing struggle to pass the Church Land Bill, naming and sharply criticising its opponents. He ends by noting he has scarcely had time to address their "political crisis".
