Summary

A draft letter from Lucy Lloyd to Felice Finzi, written in June 1871 on behalf of an ailing Wilhelm Bleek. She thanks him for his photograph, pamphlets and "Archivio" and explains they cannot send Cape journal papers in return, as none of interest are published in the Cape. Bleek's paper on Australian languages was read at the Royal Association of Liverpool but, disappointingly, they have received no copy. Lloyd describes how, despite illness, Bleek has been working on Bushman languages with two Bushmen now living at their home. Lloyd mentions the language's difficulty and Bleek's plan to enclose photographs, including one of the "elder" Bushman (||kabbo). She asks Finzi to write in a larger hand for easier translation.

Notes

1. It is difficult to locate a record of a Royal Association in Liverpool at the time - there was a Royal Institute, and perhaps Lloyd meant this body. 2. Finzi's "Archivio" refers to a journal he co-founded: "Archivio per l'Antropologia e l'Etnologia" (Archive of Anthropology and Ethnology).
