Summary

A letter from Edwin Norris to Wilhelm Bleek, dated 20 December 1858 and sent from the Foreign Office. Norris explains his delay in writing due to illness and work. He reports only one run of the New Zealand "Grammar" was printed due to cost, and he encourages Bleek to apply for a Government post in Japan requiring Dutch speakers. He updates Bleek on books for Sir George Grey and on his Cornish volume's progress at press. After writing of his desire to leave "this den" and his inability to leave the Foreign Office due to poor government pensions, Norris urges Bleek to consult Grey for his advice and remain at the Cape, where his expertise gives him a "preeminent claim to employment". He discourages Bleek from coming to England due to the scarcity of jobs and criticises colonial administration from England. He closes by advising Bleek to stay in Africa, where he is most valuable.
