Summary

A letter from Jemima Lloyd to Wilhelm Bleek, sent from Staffordshire on 4 October 1861. She has mixed feelings about Wilhelm's situation in the Cape, with Sir George leaving for New Zealand, and hopes he will take leave, visit her sisters in Natal and write to her all about it. Apologising for her short letter, she also explains her delay in replying -waiting for his letters to arrive, handling other correspondence and struggling with a bad cold and weakness. She gives detailed updates on her visits and travels. She is staying with old friends in her native county but feeling "caged" due to avoiding shocking them with her views. This spoils her visit and makes her long for Natal's freedom, and she calls herself a "moral coward". Jemima also responds to Wilhelm's "kind interest" and "brotherly" advice about finding an advisor closer than a brother or father but with a broad mind. She signs off, pointedly, as "your sister, Jemima C. Lloyd."
