Summary

A letter from Jemima Lloyd to Wilhelm Bleek, sent from Derbyshire on 4 August 1861. She received his letter but, struggling with writing due to her spine and head, is able to only send him a hasty "sketch" and owes letters to many people. She shares good news from home, including signs of Lucy's improvement, and outlines her movements since landing-staying with Mrs Fisher, visiting her father's relations and spending time with George Woolley's father. She plans to head next to her old home in Staffordshire, then to her mother's relations in the South. Jemima describes her poor health and feeling fatigued from travel, anxiety and many social interactions with strangers. She mentions an "unpleasantness" where she felt compelled to express views (probably religious) that shocked her companions. Mrs Fisher, to Jemima's surprise, has warmed to Wilhelm and understands why Jemima treasures his letters. She scolds Wilhelm for calling Mr. Kennedy her "friend", as she neither likes nor respects him and explains why. The letter ends abruptly, likely due to time constraints.
