Correspondence
A note written by Jemima Lloyd to Wilhelm Bleek in the week before their wedding, containing her notes on the draft Articles of Agreement (marriage settlement) being drawn up for the investment of her capital upon her marriage. Jemima raises questions about the legal phrasing and notes several instructions that were not followed and need alteration. These include: executor powers; appointment and management of Trustees; omission of her mother's marriage settlements; and the couple's ability to direct investments. Regarding the money she currently possesses, she wants protection from liabilities while retaining access to the capital in emergencies; she also objects to having money from her mother's settlements "tied up". The Trustees must be empowered to lend the full amount to Wilhelm on the basis of his personal security to avoid the appearance of funds being in her "sole power". She sees the settlement working like an antenuptial contract: securing her capital from misfortune while leaving them otherwise "free agents". While Jemima wishes the settlement to be "stringent", no "distrust" or "disrespect" to her uncles must be implied.
